NOW OFFERING MYOFASCIAL CUPPING!

What is Myofascial Cupping?
Myofascial cupping is a treatment method that involves using suction cups to create a vacuum effect on the skin. This suction helps lift and separate soft tissues, aiding in their release and mobility.
This technique, which dates back to 1500 BC, was commonly utilized by ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Chinese cultures, much like dry needling and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization.

How Does It Work?

Fascia is a thin layer of connective tissue enveloping muscles throughout the body. When fascia tightens or becomes restricted, it can lead to pain, stiffness, and limited movement. Myofascial cupping works by alleviating this tension and boosting blood flow to the affected area.

By applying suction through the cups, muscles and tissues are gently pulled, reducing blood flow to the area initially. In response, the body increases blood flow to that region, which can help diminish pain. Additionally, the suction stretches and loosens tissues, enhancing flexibility and ease of movement.

What is a Treatment Like?

Myofascial cupping utilizes cups made from hard plastic. The size and shape of the cups are chosen based on the targeted area. Treatments generally start conservatively with one or a few cups and may increase based on individual needs.

The cups are placed on specific areas, with suction levels kept within the patient’s comfort range. Sessions typically last between two to fifteen minutes, with the cup remaining stationary throughout the treatment. Cupping can be applied to various body parts, including the back, legs, and arms, and is often part of a comprehensive physical therapy plan.

Benefits of Myofascial Cupping

Cupping can be beneficial for conditions such as chronic pain, arthritis, and fibromyalgia. It also aids in breaking down scar tissue in muscles. Key benefits include:

  • Relief from muscle tension and pain
  • Enhanced range of motion and flexibility
  • Reduced inflammation and swelling
  • Improved circulation

After Treatment

Post-treatment, you might notice increased redness in the area, which is temporary and due to blood vessel dilation. Marks or bruising may also occur. Muscle soreness similar to what you might feel after intense exercise is common for up to 24 hours.

In some cases, small capillaries near the skin’s surface may rupture, leading to minor bruising that typically resolves within one to three weeks.
